Best of the BISS List
By Staff Writer: Casey Sol
Hey BISS Listers! Happy Hump Day! We have plenty of great shows happening this week to gear us up for Memorial Day weekend fun, festivals, BBQ's, whatever it may be! So let's jump right in...
Some of you may be getting an early start on the holiday weekend and heading to LIGHTENING IN A BOTTLE. They have quite the lineup this year, including RUBBLEBUCKET, BIG GIGANTIC, CHET FAKER, and more! Be sure to catch LUCENT DOSSIER EXPERIENCE while you're out there too - they're one of my favorite performance groups out there. If you still have to put in another day at work, you can catch the always awesome, STU ALLEN & MARS HOTEL, **WIN TICKETS** at Ashkenaz.
Rolling into Thursday we have, THE CURE & THE TWILIGHT SAD at Shoreline Amphitheater which should be a blast. Over at The Chapel we have PARTICLE **WIN TICKETS** which I've heard before described as "space-porn" which actually seems fitting. INSPECTOR GADJE will be playing at the Yerba Buena Gardens giving us a taste of Balkan style brass with 12 horns and 2 percussionists...that definitely seems like a party right there. At Doc's Lab, THE HIGHWAY POETS & SWEET PLOT **WIN TICKETS** take the stage. And last, but not least, we have the PRESERVATION HALL JAZZ BAND with YOSVANY TERRY at Miner Auditorium for some Latin Jazz and Afro-Cuban rhythms.
BOTTLE ROCK starts up on Friday and runs through the entire weekend up in Napa. If you're looking to purchase just a day ticket, Friday's line-up includes STEVIE WONDER, LENNY KRAVITZ, MICHAEL FRANTI, BUDDY GUY, & more! If you've never seen GOGOL BORDELLO, Friday is your chance at The UC Theatre Taube Family. For the funk chasers, GRANT GREEN JR., BERNARD PURDIE, WIL BLADES, & PIGWAR **WIN TICKETS** will be at The Boom Boom Room! At Hotel Utah we have three eclectic groups, TRACORUM, FLIGHT OF RYAN, and twin sisters, CARMEN & CAMILLE **WIN TICKETS** to switch things up a bit.
Right into Saturday's dance parties, at Ashkenaz we have the INAUGURAL DIASPORA DINNER with MJ's BRASS BOPPERS and ANDREW CARRIERE'S ZYDECO/CAJUN ALLSTARS **WIN TICKETS** with dance lesson's starting at 7pm. Go over and get your New Orleans fix and learn some new moves! The hip-hop duo, MACKLEMORE & RYAN LEWIS, will also be playing at Bill Graham Civic Center. If you're still thinking about BOTTLE ROCK, Saturday's lineup includes FLORENCE & THE MACHINE, DEATH CAB FOR CUTIE, ZIGGY MARLEY, MONOPHONICS, MOONALICE, and more! Can't beat these headliners! Over in Petaluma, TALLEY UP!, the psychedelic funk and New Orleans inspired band, will be playing at Lagunitas Brewing. The SF Carnaval kicks off on Saturday with BAYONICS plus the Latin rock, afro-Caribbean all-star's, SOLTRON at the Elbo Room. If you misses GRANT GREEN JR., BERNARD PURDIE, and WIL BLADES last night at The Boom Boom Room, you have another chance Saturday! Can't beat a late night funk party. We also have some tickets to giveaway for Denver band, GREENER GROUNDS **WIN TICKETS** at the Ivy Room if you're looking for some fun jams.
The weekends not over yet! BOTTLE ROCK has yet another awesome day of music including the RED HOT CHILI PEPPERS, THE LUMINEERS, SHOVELS & ROPE, RODRIGO Y GABRIELA, and (if you missed him earlier in the week in The Bay) GOGOL BORDELLO. At the Great American Music Hall, there is BERNIE MAN: A BENEFIT CONCERT TO BELIEVE IN with GUITARMAGEDDON, JORDAN & THE RITUALS, and our favorite Phish cover band, CHUM. IVAN NEVILLE will be with the PRESERVATION HALL JAZZ BAND at The Miner Auditorium. The classic American funk band, WAR, will be alongside LOS LONLEY BOYS on Sunday **WIN TICKETS** at Mountain Winery. I don't know about you, but I'm really looking forward to seeing a show at Mountain Winery this summer and we will have plenty of tickets to give away this summer! Keep your eyes on the prize! You can also head over to Tupelo if you missed TALLEY UP! yesterday.
A little sneak peak of the post-Memorial Day weekend parties, on Monday we have one man, two saxophones, RIC ALEXANDER **WIN TICKETS** spreading awareness for prostate cancer with his simultaneous saxophone performance you shouldn't miss! For some catchy sing-alongs head to the Great American Music Hall to see BRETT BENNEN with FIREKID. The week could really fly by with all these awesome acts so I'm just going to throw in that AFROMAN **WIN TICKETS** will be firing up at The Boom Boom Room!
Also, one of my favorite traveling bands, HANDMADE MOMENTS, were in a terrible accident this past week. If you caught their free Jammin' On the Bus show outside Jammin' on Haight a few weeks ago you know how talented, fun, and beautiful these folks are. Their solar powered, stage top, bus was destroyed and Joel has already undergone two surgeries on his badly crushed legs. They need all the prayers, thoughts, positivity, and well wishes they can get. Below is a link to their gofundme account to help with the costs of their injuries and living expenses while Joel is on the long road to recovery. Anything you can do helps! Thank you!!
