BISS 07.25.17 : JACK JOHNSON PLUS JOHN CRAIGIE PLUS ALO / THE CROOKED STUFF / CIRCLES AROUND THE SUN / OMD / WIL BLADES / VIOLENT FEMMES / HIGHLIGHTS OF HIGHLIGHTS

Woo hoo! What a weekend of amazingness we just had. As predicted in last week's edition, my highlight was definitely the Blues Traveler show last Thursday in San Jose. Recently, I unearthed a couple of boxes of board recordings from their shows, mostly '97-'99. What am I gonna do with stacks of DATs?

Wouldn't the world be a better place if those recordings were released into the wild, for Blues Traveler to post them to their website where everyone can listen to them? So, before the show, I gave the band all that was unearthed so far, knowing there is more treasure to be discovered in my many storage boxes down the road. I did, however, keep a promo cassette from '88 and a cassingle from '93 to listen to in the car on the way there (yes, I proudly have a working cassette deck in my car!). Between the singalong on the way there, the old swag I dug up to wear, the sharing of those DATs & seeing the usual suspects from the BT family upon arrival (band included), I was feeling pretty nostalgic by the first note of the set... And I kept dancing enthusiastically until the last note!

All that being said, I am pretty stoked for myself and all you BISS listers since we get TWO Blues Traveler shows this Fall. On November 14th & 15th, they return to The Fillmore in celebration of their 30 years as a band! That's not all we at BISS List celebrate over those two days. Coincidentally, the 15th is also the birthday of one of their long time crew members who passed away in 2015 and who happens to have been Mr. BISS aka Robert "Bo" Mahoney for just as many years... I heard they added the second show on the 14th after they sold so many tickets for the 15th. BISS hopes to have possible contest giveaways as those shows approach, so stay tuned and start spreading the word!
 #Celebrate #30years #BluesTraveler #Bo

It's not only those two BT shows at The Fillmore that I am looking that far ahead at on the musical calendar of the Bay Area (aka BISS List)... I have been scouring the listings coming up at all of our favorite venues to find the best that you don't want to miss. Over the next three weeks, I plan to help you stuff your music calendars with so many rocking shows that maybe you won't even notice if I miss a week here and there while working my favorite Nor-Cal Summer fest, For The Funk of It (8/11-8/13 in Belden, CA) followed closely after by the annual Burning Man extravaganza (pre, burn and post)...

So, while I juggle BISS & prepare for travel and adventure, I ask you all to please check the BISS List Google Calendar (http://bit.ly/bisslistcalendar ) and let me know what you think I might have missed in the coming months. If you email anything of specific worthiness to me (subject to MY approval) and I list it, you may be eligible to win tickets to an upcoming show. So, get busy. Why? Because I Said So!

Since you are doing what I say Because I Said So... DO THIS! Read the latest BISS List Interview with John Craigie by BISS Contributing editor Josh Danson! If you are going to The Greek tonight for Jack Johnson, you are going to want to get there early to catch him opening!

On to the upcoming music in the SF Bay... Here's this week's BISS List Picks of the week followed by just a few of the highlights of the highlights of the BISS List.

BISS LIST 07.20.17 : BLUES TRAVELER / NOICE! / SMOKED OUT SOUL / OASIS SF / PAMELA PARKER / VICTOR LITTLE / VINYL / SAM CHASE / SEUN KUTI & EGYPT 80

Hello Music Lovers!  Lovers may not be the right word. How about freaks? Yes, Music Freaks! You know who you are. We are those who are always looking for that next musical fix. We have been obsessed with it for as long as we can remember and to this day, no matter our age and no matter the hour. It's always there.

Folks with our condition are so lucky to be in the Bay Area where the live music options are nearly endless for every genre almost any night of the week. There is so much for all us to choose from because the music of the world comes to us, nightly.

Do you remember the first band you fell for? That band that you just had to see over and over anywhere & anytime they would play. You might sleep outside of the University Union to be at the front of the line to get the BEST seats! You might poorly plan a road trip or two in pursuit of that next gig. I know the answer for many of you might be the Grateful Dead. Of course! So the next one after that? Widespread? Phish? String Cheese? Too many to name!

Truth be told, Blues Traveler was the one for me! They are still one of my faves to this day! This tour celebrates thirty years as a touring band. Not saying I have been hooked on them that long cause that would just date me... But I feel like I haven't seen them in a 100 years even though I saw them play an epicly old school set at Jazzfest in NOLA earlier this year. So believe me  when I tell you I am more than a little excited that they are returning to the Bay Area this week... Anyone who knows me from back in the day, knows this and anyone who knows me now knows it must be true because it's rare for me to leave the city, let alone to make my way to San Jose and for a 5 pm show. And just wait, my optimistic thoughts might conquer me and the girl inside my head will convince me to catch the BT set in Sacramento on Monday to stay all in the groove. No need to be
mulling it over!

So this weekend kicks off early, because it starts on Thursday with Blues Traveler plus Ben Henderson & Friends plus Socorra @ Music in the Park at Plaza De Cesar Chavez.

When we get back to the city, we will be dropping by Asiento in the Mission for NOICE! Our friends, DJ Just & Dj B positive will be spinning the disco funk house boogie all night! From there, it's just a little jump down the street to 6th & Mission to Monarch for Smoked Out Soul's Winter Baby Summer Party feat DJ FOX and of course ZEBUEL, Will Magid, Paul Oliphant and Enrique Padilla (**WIN TICKETS**).

Of course, as always there are many other excellent musical selections on the BISS List calendar for Thursday (and every other night). We do our best to keep our calendar updated for you with all the events we think you might want to know about. http://bit.ly/bisslistcalendar

Friday... What are YOU doing Friday night? I am kicking mine off in SOMA with another fabulous live drag production by by Miss D'Arcy Drollinger and all at SF Oasis. This time with a modern comical gender bending retelling of the 70's cult coming-of-age film. Don't miss Debbie Does Dallas The Musical! If you're lucky, you might find yourself hanging out with the cast for a cocktail following the hijinks! Love this place! http://bit.ly/OasisSFEvents

After the show, PAMELA PARKER'S FANTASTIC MACHINE plus STEPPIN **WIN TICKETS** will be rocking out at the Boom Boom Room.

The Biggest Hit on Saturday night is a no brainer with VICTOR LITTLE'S BIG HIT plus BIG STICKY MESS (**WIN TICKETS**) at Boom Boom Room. Tho there are other Big Hits on Saturday in my Best Of picks for this week including Vinyl & friends ft. Fred Ross & members of Alphabet Soup plus El Metate (**WIN TICKETS**) at 19 Broadway; The Sam Chase & the Untraditional plus Coffis Brothers plus Junk Parlor (**WIN TICKETS**) at The Independent; The Humidors plus Sun Hop Fat (**WIN TICKETS**) at Ivy Room; Lyrics Born with his Full Band plus The Crooked Stuff (**WIN TICKETS**) at Sweetwater Music Hall; & BLONDE REDHEAD Performing 'Melody of Certain Damaged Lemons' in its entirety plus Porcelain Raft **WIN TICKETS** at Regency Ballroom.

Sunday will not be a day to rest with MATATU PRESENTS Seun Kuti & Egypt 80 plus DJ heyLove* **WIN TICKETS** at New Parish.

Monday, Sac for BLUES TRAVELER  at California State Fair.

Tuesday, we'll be in the hood for The Psychedelic Furs plus Robyn Hitchcock at The Fillmore. After the show, we'll head across the street to Boom Boom Room. When I am asked where the next place is to go and I say Boom Boom Room, the next question is often, "who's playing?" To which my answer is generally, "Does it Matter?" but this Tuesday is RAFA'S ONE MAN BAND & FRIENDS feat. Cochrane.McMillan & Eric Diberardino of Tea Leaf Green}  at Boom Boom Room. (Hmmm "ONE Man Band & Friends...?)

Wednesday, 7/26, is the first of two nights with Jack Johnson at The Greek. Look for an interview from BISS contributing editor, Josh Danson, with John Cragie who will be opening that first show.

A few weeks ago, The Crooked Stuff kicked off their residency night at Boom Boom Room and it was a pretty epic night! I strongly encourage you to see them this their second night in the bi-weekly series next wednesday.

Thursday, you have another chance to catch Jack Johnson at The Greek. This time with local fave ALO opening up. Staying in the East bay after the show?  Scott Amendola Quartet w/ Jenny Scheinman, John Schott and Zach Ostroff (**WIN TICKETS**) is at Ivy Room.

Here in the city on Thursday of next week,  Smoked Out Soul presents: DJ Shortkut, KingMost & Special Guests  at Monarch; Atta Kid **WIN TICKETS** is at Madrone Art Bar; amd TODD STOOPS  feat. Reed Mathis, Jay Lane & Cochrane McMillan **WIN TICKETS** at Boom Boom Room .

That's enough of my short list of BISS Picks for this week. For more, read on...

BISS LIST 07.12.17 : CROOKED STUFF / SMOKED OUT SOUL / AFROLICIOUS / OZOMATLI / BECK / THE ROOTS / KATDELIC / ERIC BURDON / CONGRATS TO LONNI PUNANI!

Happy Summer Festival Season BISS Listers! Did you miss me while I was away at High SIerra Music Festival?  As many of us all know, High Sierra is absolutely the best way to kick the summer season into high gear! This year was no exception!  Great daytime shows distracted us from the heat and the night shows under a growing Moon and glowing Jupiter reminded us of the magic that brings us together. All those that participated and contributed made it the extra special event it is every year!  Thank you to all!!

Up next on my personal Summer festival radar, is my favorite cozy Nor-Cal fest to attend and work at called For The Funk Of It.  It takes place in the quaint little town of Belden, CA (population: 22) over the weekend of 8/11-8/13. We are gonna have a blast!

The lineup for this year's  For The Funk Of It is stellar with all kinds of BISS List favorites including Karl Denson's Tiny Universe, Zigaboo Modeliste and The New Aahkesstra, Afrolicious, Dirty Revival, Mojo Green with Hornmageddon, Vokab Kompany, Katdelic, Soul Scratch, Tracorum, Motherlode, ZuhG, Pamela Parker & The Fantastic Machine, GROOVINCIBLE, Drunken Kung Fu, Hi Strangeness, 10 Minutes to Funk, The Sweat Band Experiment, Twin Engine, Sofa King, GNARPHUNK, Delvon Lamarr Organ Trio aka DLO3, Black Star Safari, & Boca do Rio.

We are currently running a For The Funk Of It contest, giving away a coveted vehicle parking pass (value - $200) to the BISS Lister who spreads the word the most by sharing on Facebook, Twitter, Email, etc. Once shared, you simply email biss@bisslist.com to let us know where you've been spreading the word. We will be selecting a winner for the current contest by 7/15, However, I know we will be running another contest (not sure what fabulous prize that will be yet!) that starts on 7/15.

While you are marking your calendars for all the best festivals coming up, be sure to make note of the Hangtown Music Festival taking place in Placerville, CA the weekend before Halloween (10/26-10/29).

In it's 7th year, Hangtown's rocking lineup includes three nights of Railroad Earth shows, with Greensky Bluegrass, Dark Star Orchestra, Chris Robinson Brotherhood, Leftover Salmon, Turkuaz, Lukas Nelson & The Promise of the Real, Todd Snider, Fruition, The Dustbowl Revival, MarchFourth, Joe Craven & The Sometimers, Shook Twins, Monophonics, Scott Pemberton Band, Afrolicious, Mojo Green, City of Trees Brass Band, Low Flying Birds, Joe Craven (MC), and more to be announced.
