A Fans Note on JAZZ FEST: I go to the second weekend of Jazzfest every year. Everyone that we've brought to sweet New Orleans, always comes back again and again...it's a remarkable city...the gator po-boys, Abita Springs beer, jambalaya...all a must try! We arrive on Wednesday and go to Lafayette Square Park for a free concert that usually features Marcia Ball and many others. It's a great way to arrive and mingle with the locals in the Big Easy! Dogs welcome!"
"Next, we head to dinner at Muriel's on Jackson Square (a must) and then walk over to Cafe Du Monde for cafe au lait and beignets by the banks of the Mississippi. We usually go there 3 times a day! (open 24 hours) Other great restaurants in town are Commander's Palace, any of Emeril's joints, Galatoire's, they've been there for a century with terrific food and the best waiters & bartenders anywhere. New Orleans' own chef John Besh, offers an incredible culinary experience at his many fine dining gems. We're especially fond of restaurants, """"August"""" and """"Luke"""" ...The chef's tasting menu at August rivals the French Laundry in Yountville, CA. IMHO and at a fraction of the cost!"
"Most every night we walk from Frenchman Street or the French Quarter, over to the Howlin Wolf. There are usually 2 shows a night of with off the hook funk and soul. This year we'll be at the Howlin' Wolf for the Megalomaniacs Ball featuring Garage a Trois and Stanton Moore Trio"
One of our favorite nights is going to one of the Superfly Presents series of shows on the riverboat Creole Queen. The band plays below deck while the paddle wheeler takes a cruise on the Mississippi river. There is always a brass band on the top outdoor deck and great food and drinks on the boat. This year we'll be seeing the GreyBoy Allstars...always a great time!
"The food at Jazzfest is worth the price of admission alone! Some of our favorites on the fairgrounds are the Trout Baquet, Cohon de lait, Prejean's andouille, quail and pheasant gumbo is the best on the scene and brings us back year after year. After too much food and all the great music on the many stages at Jazzfest, we usually buy soundboard recordings of our favorite sets from the fest. There's a """"Live Recordings"""" tent where you can easily pickup your favorites to listen to when you get back home."
"Put on some more sunblock, because we are just getting started. This year we'll head out to the Maple Leaf for an allstar Jame Brown Tribute late night. Be sure to get up early for an amazing line up at Jazzfest and loosen your belt so you can enjoy more southern cooking!"
"We are looking forward to Gov't Mule & 7 Walkers (just saw the 7 Walkers in SF at the Great American Music Hall, loves me some George Porter Jr.!), Derek Trucks at the House of Blues and no trip to New Orleans is complete without a stop at Tipitina's uptown (listening to some Professor Longhair right now!) for a night with Dumpstaphunk...Ivan and Ian Neville are the boys to see! We usually leave there as the sun is coming up and it's a bit of a cab ride back to Canal St. or the Quarter, so be sure to grab some of the BEST BBQ the guys outside Tips are selling in the purple catering truck...their food rocks!"
